Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the
questions we hear most.

Building something for your home is a big decision. Here’s everything you might want to know — in plain English, no fine print. Still have a question? Just give us a call.

Building

4 questions in this topic.

How long does it take to build a deck?
Most decks take about 1–2 weeks from the day we start, depending on size and weather. Bigger or more detailed projects can take a little longer. We’ll give you a real timeline before we begin.
Do you build year-round in Texas?
Yes. We work through most of the year. Heavy rain or a stretch of freezing weather can slow us down for safety, but we’ll keep you posted.
Can you match an existing deck or porch?
We can. If you’re adding on to something already there, we’ll do our best to match the look, height, and materials so it feels like one piece.
What sizes do you build?
Any size — from a small set of steps or ramp up to a big wraparound deck. We build to fit your yard and how you want to use it.

Materials

4 questions in this topic.

What kind of wood do you use?
Pressure-treated southern yellow pine is our standard — it’s strong, affordable, and holds up to Texas weather when it’s cared for.
Is pressure-treated wood safe?
Yes. Modern pressure-treated lumber is safe for residential use, including around kids and pets. It’s treated to resist rot and insects so it lasts.
Do you offer composite or low-maintenance options?
We can. Composite and PVC decking cost more up front but need less upkeep over the years. We’ll lay out both wood and low-maintenance options so you can choose.
What about the stain and finish?
We include a professional stain finish so your project looks good and is protected from the start. We can talk color and tone to match your home.

Scheduling

4 questions in this topic.

How soon can you start?
It depends on our current schedule, but we’ll give you a straight start date when you get your quote. We don’t leave you guessing.
Is there a long wait list?
Wait times change with the season. Sometimes we can start in a couple weeks, sometimes it’s longer. We’ll be upfront about it on your walkthrough.
What if weather delays things?
Rain happens. If weather pushes us back, we’ll let you know and pick right back up when it’s safe to work. You’re never left in the dark.
Do I need to be home during construction?
Nope. Most folks go about their day while we work. We just need access to the yard and a way to reach the build spot.

Rent-to-Own Deck Options

3 questions in this topic.

Which projects qualify for Rent-to-Own?
Rent-to-Own is currently available only for qualifying deck projects. Gazebos, covered patios, ramps, stairs, carports, and metal buildings are not included.
Does every deck qualify?
Eligibility depends on the project and the Rent-to-Own provider’s requirements. SMITHdecks will review your project and explain the available options.
Can I use Rent-to-Own for a carport or gazebo?
No. Rent-to-Own is currently offered only for qualifying deck projects.

Service Areas

3 questions in this topic.

What areas do you serve?
We’re based in Victoria, Texas and serve the surrounding area — generally within about 150 miles of town.
Do you travel outside Victoria?
We do, within reason. If you’re a little farther out, give us a call — we’ll let you know if we can make it work.
Which towns do you cover?
Victoria and nearby communities like Cuero, Goliad, Edna, Yoakum, Port Lavaca, Inez, and the surrounding countryside. Not sure if you’re in range? Just ask.

Permits

3 questions in this topic.

Do I need a permit for my project?
It depends on your city or county and what you’re building. Many smaller projects don’t need one, but covered structures and bigger builds often do.
Do you handle the permits?
We can help guide you through what’s needed. We’ll talk permit requirements during your walkthrough so there are no surprises.
What about HOA approval?
If you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, check their rules first. We’re happy to share plans or details they might need to approve your project.

Construction

4 questions in this topic.

How do you prepare the ground?
We set posts in concrete footings dug below the surface so they’re solid and level. For some projects we clear and grade the area so it drains right.
Do you use concrete footings?
Yes. Posts are anchored in concrete footings so your deck, ramp, or stairs stays steady underfoot for years.
How do you handle slopes or uneven yards?
We build to the yard. We can step a deck, add a landing, or adjust post heights so everything ends up level and solid even on uneven ground.
Will you mess up my yard?
We keep the job site clean and respect your property. Some foot traffic and digging is part of it, but we tidy up as we go and leave it neat when we finish.

Accessibility

4 questions in this topic.

Do you build ADA-compliant ramps?
We build ramps with ADA-minded slopes, widths, and handrails so they’re safe and easy with a wheelchair or walker. We’ll talk through your needs and build it to work.
Can you add handrails to my existing steps?
Yes. If your steps are solid but just need something to hold onto, we can add sturdy handrails on one or both sides.
What’s the right slope for a ramp?
A gentle slope is best — easy to push up and safe to walk down. If the door is high, we add landings and a switchback turn so the slope never gets too steep.
Do you build for wheelchair access?
Absolutely. Ramps and entry access for wheelchairs and walkers are one of our specialties, especially for manufactured and country homes.
